Why isn't MIT Economist and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Peter Diamond good enough for the Republicans?

Apparently Shelby, R (AL) doesn't think Peter Diamond is good enough to be a Federal Reserve Governor because he doesn't agree with this spending policies. Or is it because the Republicans are making sure this President fails? We need all the brains we can get to help us out of this mess.
