Explanation of the concept of alchemy in Full Metal Alchemist?

I read Full Metal Alchemist, so I get it, but I was looking for the most precise, yet concise, way of explaining alchemy. It would be helpful to include a bit about transmutation circles and why Ed, Al, and Izumi Curtis don't need them. Thanks!
